Living Abroad with Andrea Bain
Exploring the world of real estate beyond our borders, On the Go Magazine took some time to talk with Andrea Bain, co-host of Live Here Buy This on HGTV (Wednesday nights at 9pm)
OTG: What makes Live Here Buy This different from all the other real estate shows?
andrea: First of all it’s the best show on TV (besides Scandal, of course). All jokes aside, I think of LHBT as a real estate fantasy show that gives the viewer a chance to imagine what it would be like to live in their favourite city. We also give the potential buyer a real house tour and show them what their budget will get them in different locations.
If you could buy your dream home anywhere in the world, where would it be?
OMG That’s a tough question to answer because there are so many spectacular places, but I have given it some thought and narrowed it down to three places: Aix en Provence in the South of France, Oahu, Hawaii, or St Barts. In a perfect world I would split my time between these three places.
Did any of the locations you visited surprise you?
The city that surprised me the most was Lima, Peru. I have traveled to South America many times and never really heard any one talk about Lima, but it’s an amazing city with great restaurants, beautiful homes, lots of nightlife and a gorgeous coastline. I would go back there in a heartbeat.
What’s been your favourite experience shooting the show?
My favourite experience was standing on the equator between the northern and southern hemisphere in Ecuador and I got my passport stamped there so it’s official. That was pretty cool.
What’s been the worst experience?
The worst experience was also a very funny one. I love dogs and there was a golden retriever at this one house that we were touring that I fell in love with. We were playing catch and I was petting him and then he put his paws up on my chest and started humping me and I couldn’t get away from him! I panicked and started screaming, “Help me!” Luckily my crew was there to rescue me. That was the last time I played with a homeowner’s dog.
Do you meet a lot of Canadians living abroad?
I’ve met quite a few Canadians living abroad — most of them were from Saskatchewan and Alberta and it was always really cool meeting fellow Canucks on the trips; it feels like running into extended family you’ve never met.
What advice would you give someone who is thinking about moving to their dream location?
Go for it! If you have fallen in love with another city and you’re ready to make the move get a good realtor and book the flight, but if you’re life doesn’t allow for big changes right now tune in to Live Here Buy This Wednesday at 9pm on HGTV.
