Sometimes living in the city is a little overwhelming, and can create summer anxiety. But, these 12 Ontario locations are perfect for anyone looking for a fun, yet simple day trip away from the 6ix.
1. Wasaga Beach
If you’re looking to pretend you’re a cast member of the Jersey Shore, Wasaga Beach is your destination. Rent a cottage with your friends for the weekend, or take the hour and a half road trip for sandy beaches and cool brews.
2. Stratford Festival
Since 1952, the Ontario town of Stratford has been the host for the amazing summer long Shakespeare festival. Since 1994, Stratford has also been home to the mega talented Canadian singer, Justin Bieber. Whether you’re visiting this small town for the grandiose words of a famous playwright, or if the kids are forcing you to visit the birthplace of Bieber, this town never disappoints.
3. Professor’s Lake
Brampton is underrated when it comes to natural beauty and breathtaking views. But, if you’re looking for a tranquil lake to relax, Professor’s Lake is your destination. The small lake is quiet, peaceful, and will transport you far from the bustle of the city.
4. Treetop Trekking
If you’re into adventure, ziplining’ across Brampton will fill your adrenaline fix. Treetop Trekking in Brampton offers zipline crossings across the Heart Lake Conservation area, as well over 65 aerial games. Your heart rate won’t be able to stand it!
5. Sundance Balloons
Seeing the views of Southern Toronto in a wicker basket, hot air balloon can not be beat! The balloon ride lasts for an entire hour and ends with a sweet treat; a champagne toast.
6. Dundern Castle
History and architectural beauty align at this residence, located about an hour away from the heart of Toronto’s downtown core. This castle was once home to Canada’s premier Sir Allan MacNab, ancestor to the current Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla. The castle is completely restored, and looks exactly as it would have over 200 years ago.
Summer is the perfect time to test out a new hobby, including white water rafting and kayaking. Barrie’s HAPPYPADDLING offers paddle boarding, kayaking, as well as instructor driven canoe rides. Spend an hour on the lakes of Barrie, and your worries will disappear!
8. Spirit Tree Cidery
Forget France or Italy, Ontario’s wineries are considered some of the best in the world. Spirit Tree Cidery is located 45 minutes away from Toronto, and offers wine tastings, tours of the grounds, as well as their famed pastries straight from the wood-burning oven.
9. Tews Falls
An hour away from Toronto, these falls put the ones at Niagara to shame. Tews Falls is the source of Logie’s creek in the beautiful area of Hamilton. Being able to avoid the chaotic tourists in Niagara, makes Tews Falls all that more breathtaking.
10. Elora George
You’d be surprised that Elora Gorge is in Canada, and not in the Mediterranean. These hills and waterfronts are located in Guelph, only an hour and a half from Toronto. Bring some beers, sandwiches, and your bikini to this destination and get your summer started the right way!
11. Scenic Caves At Blue Mountain
Mysterious, haunting, yet incredibly beautiful, these caves are ready to be explored! Dig for gems, or walk along a canopy walk.
12. White Water Walk
Niagara is one of the biggest tourist destinations in the world, much less Canada. So, if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em. The White Water Walk is a serene overview of the rapids of the Niagara river. Head to the casino afterwards to really test your luck!
