Protect Your Presents With These Helpful Packaging Tips
As we approach the holidays, many of us will purchase and ship tokens of our love and affection to our nearest and dearest around the world. Focus is placed primarily on finding the perfect gift to give, but what if it doesn’t arrive in perfect condition? Behind every great gift, and every special moment spent unwrapping the yet-to-be discovered treasure, is the box that got it there.
“You put so much thought into selecting the perfect gift, so give it the care it deserves and put an equal amount of thought into how that gift is packaged,” says Michelle Konashewych, manager of operations at The UPS Store. “We certainly do all we can to make sure gifts are delivered on time and in original condition, but the journey really starts with the proper packaging.”
The experts at UPS Canada offer the following tips for safe and secure packaging:
1. GET A BETTER BOX: Don’t re-use old boxes, whenever possible. Boxes that have been used before will weaken and break down more easily in transit. If you are going to re-use a sturdy box, make sure all old address information is removed.
2. DON’T WRAP WITH PAPER: Brown Kraft paper or wrapping paper can tear easily, and labelling and any delivery instructions could be lost in the process.
3. USE PACKING TAPE: Masking or cellophane tape aren’t strong enough to withstand the shipping process. Secure each seam of your box with two-inch-wide packing tape on the top and bottom, as well as the sides.
4. PACK FOR THE TOUGHEST ENVIRONMENT YOUR PACKAGE WILL FACE: Gifts travelling by air or shipment vehicle may have a bumpier ride, so pad them accordingly with packing material like Styrofoam or packaging peanuts (which can be re-used).
