Give Clothing and Furniture A New Life!
Did you know that the average Toronto household throws out about 11 kilograms (24 pounds) of clothing and other textiles every year? That’s a lot of clothing filling up our landfill. We can do better.
MAKE YOUR CLOTHES LIVE ON BY:
• repairing and altering your favourite pieces;
• donating to resale or reuse organizations;
• returning unwanted items to retail stores that collect them; and,
• buying only what you need.
Remember, old clothes, shoes, blankets, and curtains DO NOT belong in the Blue Bin (recycling). They ruin perfectly good recyclables, can get caught in sorting machines, damage equipment and can cause workplace injuries at the recycling facility.
Donate clean and odourless clothing (and other reusable items) that are in good condition to organizations. If your items can’t be donated, put them in the garbage.
> Did you know that there are agencies that pick up used furniture and clothing/textiles from your home or business and provide them to individuals in need?
In 2017, the City of Toronto will begin work on a Textile Collection and Reuse Strategy. The strategy will increase awareness of clothing reuse opportunities and explore opportunities for collection to help keep them out of landfill.
