Just like the explorers of old, we navigate through life looking for something to discover and explore. Lambton County holds treasures both rich and rare to uncover. We’re confident that the treasures we hold will beckon you to come and experience them for yourself.
Every year, more than two million visitors journey here, to Blue Water Country, to find for themselves what makes this part of Ontario so different from all the others. This time, the secret is yours to unfold.
Lambton County’s story begins 160 years ago as the birthplace of North America’s oil industry. Men of the Aamjiwnanng First Nation first found the sticky crude in the black gum beds near today’s Oil Springs and the early settlers of New France saw it seeping from the ground near Enniskillen’s Black Creek. The first wells followed in 1851 and North America’s oil industry was born.
Visitors can relive our Oil Heritage and embark on a self-guided driving tour of the Fairbank Oil Properties Ltd. to view sculptures depicting the life of the men who drilled for oil here in the 1860s. Stop, turn off your vehicle, roll down the window and listen to the jerker line system as it still operates today. Those who crave more Oil Heritage are encouraged to visit the Oil Museum of Canada in Oil Springs.
Today, Lambton County is a land of entertaining pursuits, and a calmer, yet culturally rich lifestyle that visitors desire and seek, leading many to remain, and to claim Lambton County for their own. Here lies scores of alluring experiences and intriguing discoveries to savour and enjoy.
