The palette of the general public is changing. Consumers have become more aware, health conscious, and adept at identifying processed foods. The demand for fresh, sophisticated food is at an all-time high. Specifically, restaurants serving Indian cuisine are popping up in cities everywhere.
It goes without saying that frequent visits to Indian restaurants can become rather pricey, and with a limited selection of Indian cooking sauces available in supermarkets (especially those that use fresh, local, and unprocessed ingredients) the average consumer is not equipped to make authentic Indian dishes at home. In fact, many of the major brands on the shelves today are imported, and do not use flavourful, fresh ingredients. Simply put — the profit margin for a business is much higher when you use cheap, low-quality ingredients as a substitute. Proving a common misconception that imported products are not always more authentic.
Enter the Kataria family, Indo-Canadians whom in 2010 decided they wanted to see something different from the oily and bland products that were on store shelves. KFI (Kataria Foods Inc.) was founded by a mother and son duo out of Brampton, ON, with one goal: to create all natural cooking sauces that would facilitate quick meals for hectic lifestyles that delivered real Indian flavours to Canadian dinner plates. Their key to success: balancing the traditional tastes of India with the tastes of the ever-enhancing palette of the new generation.
KFI began with identifying key flaws with the Indian cooking sauces in the market — ingredients that were unfamiliar and hard to pronounce, bland and oily taste profiles and price. In other words, the sauces were either tasteless or too spicy, had a layer of oil at the top, and customers were paying a premium for them because they were imported.
As local manufacturers, the difference in taste comes from KFI’s locally sourced premium ingredients. Fresh onions, ginger and garlic purées, and batch-roasted spices prove that the spice is right in KFI cooking sauces. With a cleaner ingredient list than the competition, the sauces retail at a price lower than one would expect for such high-quality ingredients, lower than most of the leading imported brands.
When all is said and done, what’s left is a restaurant-quality dish prepared in minutes that the whole family can enjoy — without burning a hole in Canadians’ wallets.
