It’s been a cold, long and bloated winter, and the more weeks we endured, the more we ate and drank. But it’s finally time to retire our eating pants and bulky sweaters, and slip into short shorts and beach ware. No need to panic, diet or deprive yourself! Just follow my easy eating spring cleaning steps and you’ll be feeling fabulous all year long.
BE MINDFUL of HUNGER
We tend to let ourselves get super hungry, and then binge on everything and anything we see. To make healthier choices rather than frantic ones, be mindful to your hunger and satiety, and always stay between ¼ and ¾ of the way full.
Start the day with the right fuel to avoid desperate binges on high calorie, unsatisfying convenience foods like pastries or bagels. Instead, opt for a breakfast with a combo of protein, fibre and healthy fat that will keep you full until your next meal or snack. Try Steel-Cut Oats with canned pumpkin, nuts and banana, or a poached egg with whole grain toast and peanut butter.
To avoid overeating at meals, always keep snacks on hand with around 200 calories and that same combo of fibre, protein and fat we talked about. My go-tos
are an ounce of almonds (23 if your counting), or hummus with veggies. But even healthy snacks can lose their smart-snack-stamp when they’re mindlessly eaten straight out of the fridge, box or bag. Always transfer your portion to a plate, bowl or baggie so you can control exactly how much you eat.
When 5 PM rolls along and you don’t have a dinner plan, it’s easy to just call in a pizza. On your day off, plan your weekly meals with a categorized grocery list. This not only saves you from spending calories and cash on take out, but it also helps curb those impulse buys of unnecessary high calorie snacks at the store.
To downsize without even noticing, swap your big dinner sets with smaller ones. A healthy portion of pasta on a 10” plate looks satisfying, but you may be tempted to top it up if served on a 13” plate. Don’t let your eyes fool your stomach!
Easy peasy, right? No dieting, no deprivation, just a quick five step Spring Clean to help you shake the winter routine and enjoy the sassy side of Spring.
