Atos Markham Pan Am / Parapan Am Centre
The Atos Markham Pan Am/Parapan Am Centre is a $78.5-million multi-purpose sports venue located in the city’s developing downtown core. Jointly funded by the Government of Canada and the City of Markham, it is home to one of a handful of Olympicsized pools in the GTA and a field house that has already proven to be world-class.
Next month, top water polo athletes from 41 countries will go for Pan Am glory here. Though the Americans are the reigning Pan Am champs in the pool, perhaps with a little local support Canada will bring home the gold. In addition, this venue will host badminton and table tennis during the Parapan Am Games — so be sure to get your tickets and support our home-grown talent.
Balancing these two uses, these sports facilities will continue to be a hive of activity long after the Pan Am Games have concluded. Not only has the Atos Markham Pan Am/Parapan Am Centre already had the privilege of hosting international competition in badminton and water polo, but it is also scheduled as an Olympic qualifying berth for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.
It’s a wonderful legacy for the community both for public recreation and in attracting even more sports tourism events to the area.
The Pan Am Games take place from July 10 to 26 and the Parapan Am Games from August 7 to 15. For a list of events, please visit toronto2015.org/schedule.
