Making A Stylish First Impression
by Dvira Ovadia | Whether you are impressing your guests or making yourself feel good by stepping through your front door. It’s important to create a mark that has a lasting impression, more so a well-designed entry means careful design and planning to ensure that the space is stylish, tidy and functional.
Setting the tone with a beautiful rug to warm up the entry is a great starting point. It’s warm, inviting and adds a layer of texture and colour. A runner also creates a visual path and helps create an inviting lead-in for anyone entering your home.
If your front entrance is large and wide, consider a larger area rug to create a grand feeling.
When decorating a front hall for our clients I often love to add a striking chair, a pair of stools or a beautiful bench to sit on while waiting at the door or putting on or off your shoes is a functional item that also helps the space feel complete. Don’t forget to throw in pillows for colour or a cozy blanket to add a punch of colour and texture.
Keeping things practical and functional at the front entrance doesn’t mean it has to be boring, coat hooks, umbrella holders, baskets and other front door necessities can be fun and quirky. Key holders are another front door necessity, from vintage cigar boxes to decorative vessels, finding a unique place holder for your keys is another crucial component to keeping the front hall neat and tidy.
Including a mirror in your front hall is useful for checking yourself out before you head out to greet the world , it’s also great item that functions to reflect light and create depth in the space. A short mirror looks great when placed above a slim console table, while an oversized mirror leaning on the floor can create quite an impact.
If space permits a front hall table is a great piece of furniture for placing mail, boxes and decorative items. If a console won’t work, consider a side table next to your bench
As a designer I believe that lighting is a key factor especially in a front hall, not only do you want to make sure that you have a well-lit space to enter at night, but you also want to add an element of drama always with your lighting. A beautiful lantern or a striking artistic chandelier can really leave a lasting impression!
Defining your front hall starts with function and ends with personality, make sure that you shape that front hall in a style that defines you. Creating a striking first impression and a notable feeling that resonates when you depart is crucial to any foyer.
Create a stylish front hall or side entry with these extra tips.
- A bold colour or wallpaper can help you define the space and create an intimate look.
- Art on the walls warms up the bare walls and creates interest.
- For small spaces consider transparent furniture, from Ghost chair to a glass console, these are both functional and airy.
