by Linda Mazur | Our walls have experienced so many different lives. They have seen trends come and go, only to re-emerge once again … like wallpaper. Over the last few years we have seen the introduction of some absolutely stunning wallpapers full of colour, texture and pattern. These are not the papers of decades ago, these are wall coverings that breathe life and excitement in to our spaces. From bold geometrics to vintage floral, opulent metallic finishes, to the natural uncomplicated look of grasscloth we just can’t get enough of the design power of wallpaper.
Wallpaper has the capability of delivering a “wow” factor that simply goes beyond that of paint. A few rolls can transform and define a space in such dynamic and luxurious ways; whether large or small your room instantly takes on a different style and character.
Personally, I adore working with grasscloth for wall coverings, the natural textures and variation in shading of colour are subtle and yet they still make a great impact in any room. There’s an amazing selection of grasscloths available today in an abundance of colours and weaves, some even with the added touch of a metallic sheen or metallic threads woven directly into the wall covering.
As a designer, I often find that homeowners can be a bit leery or “commitment phobic” of wallpaper. It might be the colour, bold pattern, or installation factor that has some people cautious of taking that final step and see it enhancing the walls of their living space. If you’ve lived through the wallpaper days of the ‘90s, with matching papers and borders in virtually every room of your home, it’s understandable why you might be a little apprehensive to go down that road once again. However, I’d like to suggest spending a day at your local wallpaper store and delight in all the amazing new wallpapers available to us today. One company that never disappoints with their selections is Crown Wallpaper in Toronto (crownwallpaper.com).
Embrace the flower power of this spring for your powder room, or select a soft organic grasscloth for your dining room, or perhaps a bold geometric is what you’re envisioning to add energy and vibrancy to your understated hallway whatever it is that happens to catch your eye don’t be scared to go with it. Remember, today’s wallpaper trends are about adding a “wow” factor to your space so be selective about the walls or rooms you wish to highlight and make a statement with what you select.
