Are you having difficulty participating in conversations? Do you have trouble hearing in crowds or in the presence of background noise? If you answered yes, then you may have hearing loss.
“It is estimated that 10% of all Canadians have hearing loss,” says ListenUP! Canada’s Chief Audiologist, Jillian Price. “Of those, only about 20% actually seek treatment.” In other words, about 80% of those with a treatable hearing loss go untreated. That’s a statistic that Price and ListenUP! Canada intend to change.
The impact of this loss on quality of life is significant. “An untreated hearing loss causes needless stress, anxiety and embarrassment. It may also lead to withdrawal from social activities and even depression,” says Price.
Price recommends that everyone over the age of 60 have their hearing tested in order to establish a baseline to monitor changes in their hearing over time. In fact, Price and ListenUP! Canada have recently joined the National Campaign for Better Hearing with the goal of providing free hearing tests for all Canadians over the age of 60. And as a bonus, ListenUP will donate $2.00 for every hearing test they perform in order to provide hearing aids for those otherwise could not afford them.
“The Campaign for Better Hearing was established to increase awareness of hearing loss, to educate people about the available solutions, such as hearing aids and assistive listening devices, and to reduce the stigma of hearing loss and hearing aids,” states Price. “We fit thousands of people with hearing aids every year, but we’ve joined this campaign so that we can help even more.”
