Create Privacy In Your Yard
by carson arthur | Let’s face it, sometimes urban centres can feel like you’re living in a fish bowl. With larger homes being built on increasingly smaller lots, the residential density has made visually sharing your outdoor space with your neighbours an accepted way of life.
So how do we take back our privacy? It’s simple. Whether you’re working with a large or small budget, the trick is getting a little creative with your existing surroundings.
Here are my top 3 tips for turning your backyard into your very own secret retreat:
Add a pergola Of all the design techniques for creating privacy, adding a pergola is by far my favourite. It instantly creates an intimate space to unwind where you don’t have to worry about neighbours peeking in.
The trick is to use a product that can stand up to our unpredictable Canadian seasons, like pressure treated wood. My top choice is MicroPro Sienna. I love that it’s received numerous environmental designations, so it won’t leach toxins into my garden beds.
Best of all, with its rich brown hue it is ready to go with no initial staining required: save yourself a trip up the ladder!
Get creative with your privacy screens. Repurposing furniture has become a huge trend in interior design over the past few years but often people don’t think to incorporate it outdoors.
Using old pieces of furniture to create privacy screens is both fun and economical. I love to hang upcyle old doors to make a statement, but you can also try this with an old fence panel.
Plant small trees instead of big ones!
Small trees are great for creating privacy because you can plant them closer to where you actually need it. Think about using smaller varieties that you can plant closer to the deck and really take advantage of all the privacy without the fear to the tree taking over the entire space.
The key to creating privacy is to really understand exactly where you need it. Sit in your patio furniture and look around. No one wants to feel like they are on display. Make the most of your own backyard this summer and try a few of my privacy solutions!
