by Linda Mazur | The renovation season is upon us once again! If your bathroom makes the list this year there’s a few things you should consider: bathrooms are not the simple utilitarian rooms they once were, but have become highly stylized spaces that not only evoke personal taste but customized lavishness. Whether you desire a “spa-like” retreat or simply a classic look with functionality, today’s bathrooms can deliver large on luxury.
When looking to renovate a bathroom your design should bring together the best of what you envision while delivering on maximum storage, functionality and aesthetic.
Trends for the coming year continue to deliver on style and luxury. Large walk-in showers are “en pointe”; with the addition of sculptural focal point soaker tubs, one great stylish brand to source from is Victoria+Albert. In regards to showers, the “curbless” shower, one of my personal favourites as a designer, continues to gain popularity offering a seamless look to your space. Bathroom faucets are showing many wonderful warm metals beyond chrome. The multitude of body sprays that once cluttered our shower walls are on the decline and we are seeing the growing use of multiple shower heads, both ceiling and wall mount.
Pattern and texture is big this year in design and there are many ways we can add our personal touches to our bathroom renovations while staying on trend.
• Set a realistic budget
As a designer I often find many clients believe that since the bathroom is a small area it will not cost a lot to renovate — on the contrary. Once you start looking at all the options available to you, you might be surprised how much it can cost. Do some investigating to see what the best options are for you, and consider working with a designer to maximize your design options.
• Don’t fear large tile
When shopping for tile don’t be swayed in to believing that because your room is small you must stay with a small-scaled tile. A simple large-scaled tile can create the illusion of a much larger space.
• Think through your storage space wisely
There are many stylish readymade vanities available to source from many respectable brands like Victoria+Albert today; or consider a custom vanity to be able to truly maximize your storage needs.
• Be wise when renovating
Look for assistance from professionals to be more efficient with your budget.
In the end be inspired by all that you see, but also be realistic about your space and your budget. A good bathroom design will deliver all that your heart desires while creating for you a wonderfully luxurious space for years ahead.
