Take The Home Fitness Test – MCAP
A home fitness test can help you see the overall health of your home. Conduct an annual review to ensure it is in top condition.
Air and water
Seal your windows and doors and check for cracks in the window frames. For better air quality, clean air ducts and change furnace filters to keep dust and bacteria at bay.
Check the main water shut off valve, pipes and faucets for any leaking. Ensure outdoor bibs and indoor bleeders of the water shut off valves are turned on to drain any excess water that may have been frozen in the pipes in winter. Check for water marks, moisture or leaking in ceilings and walls too.
Natural forces like wind and gravity may cause structural movement of your home, while heat and cold will cause materials to expand and contract. A structural check of the inside and outside of your home is important to monitor over time to ensure that the home is sound. Look out for cracking, rotting, buckling, warping, heaving or shifting.
Electrical and Safety equipment
Electrical panels should be reviewed to ensure that nothing is damaged, missing, loose, or rusted. If you do find anything unusual, contact a professional or your condo board for assistance.
Don’t forget to check smoke and carbon monoxide detectors and fire extinguishers because they help protect you.
Check your home insurance policy
Contact your home insurance provider to understand your coverage and how to make a claim so you understand what to do if something happens.
