Shopping for a Bed – Design & Decor
If you sleep a little more than I do, you probably spend about one third of your life in bed.I know shopping for a mattress and box spring doesn’t sound like the most exciting purchase in the world, like buying new sofa or dining table, but it is one of the most important ones you’ll ever make. You invest a lot of time here after you buy it, below are my top 3 things to consider before you make the big purchase.
1. The Base
I recommend buying a new box spring every time you purchase a new mattress, because older box springs may not give you optimum support. If you are purchasing a box spring, be sure to keep the measurements in mind! The rigid frame can’t bend through small hallways and openings, so you may need to purchase a double box spring (2 smaller parts).
2. The Core
The most popular core seems to still be the pocket coil core, where coils are individually wrapped to make flexible pocket clusters. This flexibility helps to contour the surface to the natural curvature of the spine. There is also memory foam core, which is a high-density, pressure-relieving foam that has the ability to adjust to an individual’s shape. Some people find that the foam can get quite warm as it traps your body heat as well, so there are new gel-infused versions which I personally really like. Improving upon the traditional memory foam, mattresses such as the Dormeo Octaspring use a high-tech memory foam spring system to help regulate your body temperature, letting you stay comfy and warm the right way. This innovative concept seems to be the technology most people will sleep on in the very near future.
3. The Padding
While the bed’s core is made to support the body and align your spine, the padding is like icing – all about luxury and personal taste. Pillow tops can be filled with a wide range of fills, and generally higher end models will have better quality foams that may include layers of memory foam and/or latex. They can also be upholstered in quality fabrics such as cashmere and silk. Ultimately, you can never be sure how any brand will feel until you try it out.
