SPREAD HOPE THIS CHRISTMAS
BY JUNE LI | The streets are lined with holiday decorations and filled with singing carolers — Christmas is fast approaching. Snow is falling and malls are bustling with people trying to find the perfect gift for their loved ones.
Though Christmas is supposed to be a time of happiness and joy, for the one in ten Canadian families living in poverty this Christmas will just be another day. When you have to skip a meal so your children can eat, buying a gift or preparing Christmas dinner just isn’t an expense that you can afford.
Every year, The Salvation Army is able to help individuals break free from the cycle of poverty by meeting their most basic and pressing needs. Funds received stay local and help The Salvation Army assist individuals and families during
the holidays and year round. They also fund our life-changing programs such as addictions counselling, housing assistance, and hunger- relief services.
Poverty isn’t always easy to see, especially during the holidays. Your support will help restore hope and dignity across the Greater Toronto Area. Because of people like you, over the last The Salvation Army in the Ontario Central-East Division was able to provide assistance to 266,000 people during Christmas which included 111,000 hampers, 48,000 sunshine bags and 368,000 toys. This year, the need is just as great.
Nobody should be sad or hungry during Christmas. Help struggling families in your community smile this season and make Christmas a reality. To donate, visit SalvationArmy.ca or call 1-800-SAL-ARMY.
