Quinoa, pronounced “Keen-wah”, originated in areas in Peru and Bolivia. Although its appearance resembles grains like rice or couscous, quinoa actually belongs to the same family as the sugar beet and spinach!
Boasting huge nutritional value and antioxidants, quinoa was a sacred grain in many ancient civilizations located in Bolivia, Chile, and Peru. The Incas, a population that resided in the mountains of Bolivia, called it the “mother of all grains” and held annual ceremonies where emperors would plant the first quinoa seeds of the year.
During the time of Spanish colonization in Central and South America, the farming of quinoa was forbidden and the crop almost became extinct! Despite the odds, quinoa cultivation was successfully restored in later years and it now thrives in numerous locations.
Quinoa has been dubbed a “super grain” because it offers extremely high-quality protein and lots of fibre.
