Jennifer Valentyne Joins The Q107 Team
by andrew chapados | One of the most iconic figures in Toronto media for the last two decades, Jennifer Valentyne has always been on the frontlines of the city’s most popular brands. Whether MuchMusic or CityTV, Valentyne is the woman the audiences relate to, bringing her friendly and uniquely charming personality wherever she goes.
In a time when no one woke up and immediately checked their phone; commuters, professionals and other GTA-living young adults would wake up to see what Jennifer was doing today in order to get a smile.
Now, after leaving her post at Breakfast Television, Jennifer is helping new fans seize the day and commute to work by joining Derringer in the Morning on Q107. From one famous Toronto show to another, she returns to her love of radio by cohosting there, while successfully returning as the host of The Bachelor Canada After Show coming to W Network this fall.
We caught up with Jennifer to talk about her job transition, what it means to fill these roles and how she wakes up in the morning.
http://ukdrn.co.uk/slides/RPI-5-11.html OTG: Jennifer, how have you balanced being on Derringer in the Morning and hosting The Bachelor Canada After Show at the same time? Four-hour morning shows must take a tremendous amount of stamina.
enter site JENN: Being on the radio is a perfect way to start my day. I have always had a lot of energy and I love the Bachelor! I would be watching and talking about it with my friends anyway.
http://thermograve.co.uk/portfolio-item/812/ OTG: Speaking of The Bachelor Canada After Show, has your involvement with the show changed your outlook on relationships or dating in any way?
JENN: Absolutely. I think people really know more than ever what they want in a life partner and they don’t beat around the bush. Standing out is important but being true to yourself is even more so. The one thing I’ve learned that I have passed on to my kids is that confidence is the most attractive quality and to be confident with who you are.
OTG: What’s the best part about working on the show?
JENN: The show is such an enjoyable and easy watch. Let’s say it’s a guilty pleasure that takes you away from everything else. The best part is meeting the guests and other super fans of the show and dishing on all the drama. It’s just fun! My favourite guests are the Bachelors and Bachelorettes who have been sent home. You feel like you know them and they give you all the dirt.
OTG: You’ve worked in many different facets of comedy; who/what is providing you the most laughs these days?
JENN: I follow a lot of interesting people on social media who make me laugh. Some people I’m following… @lauraclery on Instagram. She is just goofy and a little naughty. @DebraDiGiovanni on Twitter. I find her witty take on life very entertaining; and sometimes I like to check out Daryn Jones’ rants on YouTube. Both Debra and Daryn were guests on the After Show last season and had me in stitches.
OTG: Morning show hosts wake up incredibly early to prepare for shows; what makes your mornings more tolerable?
JENN: I’ve been getting up early for over 25 years. Definitely the listeners. Some of them used to be the viewers who watched me grow up on tv, get married and have kids. Some of them have now followed me to radio. I am currently working with the best in the biz, John Derringer, Ryan Parker and John Garth Garbutt. We have good laughs together while brightening other people’s days. We don’t hold back on the show and we push the envelope, which I find exciting!
OTG: In your opinion, who’s been the most interesting studio guest you’ve had on Q107?
JENN: It has to be Canadian actor/philanthropist Kim Coates. He has this way of making you feel like you’re an old friend.
OTG: Are there any performers you’ve always hoped to be compared to?
JENN: Julia Louis Dreyfus (as Elaine Benes); I still watch Seinfeld reruns every night before I go to bed. I even dance like her.
OTG: With accomplishing so much on TV and being on the iconic Derringer in the Morning, what other goals are you setting for yourself?
JENN: Being suddenly let go from my last job gave me the opportunity to re-invent myself in unexpected ways. I am passionate about inspiring other women through speaking engagements and writing for Vitalize Magazine. I also love connecting with others through social media, whether it’s a video on Facebook/ Instagram or a message on Twitter. I find it exhilarating to be able to share with people all over the world!
