Jackie Redmond: Fan Favourite
by Andrew Chapados | Sportsnet TV host Jackie Redmond is best known for her work on the highlight desk on Sportsnet Central, as well as for presenting the much-loved Misplays of the Month where sports fans get to sit back and watch how their favourite athletes messed up over the past 30 days. Jackie is a fan favourite among the 18–45 demographic; there isn’t a sports fan in the province that doesn’t recognize her for her enthusiasm, jokes and knowledge of a wide array of sports.
We caught up with Jackie to speak on her popularity, her shows and her love of WWE.
otg: You’ve become a big sports personality with over 100,000 social media followers; what type of work ethic do you need to get where you are?
jackie: Honestly, my work ethic is the main reason I am where I am today. I pride myself on it. Even if I’m not in the Sportsnet studio, I’m still working — brainstorming ideas, critiquing my work, or putting together a social media plan to push an interview or show I’ve done; the work I’m doing at home isn’t even in my job description, but I do it because I know it will pay off. Work ethic is extremely important, it’s not just about the amount of hours you log, it’s also about the time you’re willing to put in to get better and improve. I want to be the best I can be. There’s a quote by Derek Jeter that I love where he said, “There may be people that have more talent than you, but there is no excuse for anyone to work harder than you do.” I try and live by that.
otg: We love seeing you on Misplays of the Month — what’s your favourite of 2016?
jackie: Oh wow, that’s tough! I always love the funny stuff like athletes falling, but I have to go with Rougned Odor’s error against the Blue Jays in the ALDS. I mean talk about life coming around full circle! In May, Odor humiliated Jose Bautista with the now infamous punch in the final regular season game between the two teams. Flash forward to October when they meet in the playoffs and it just so happens that Odor’s throwing error is the final nail in the coffin of the Texas Rangers season. Karma is REAL!
otg: How did you get involved in covering WWE events and why do you think there’s been such a big resurgence of the sport? Who’s your favourite wrestler?!
jackie: My introduction to WWE came back when Stone Cold Steve Austin, The Rock and Triple H were in their hay day, aka “The Attitude Era.” I used to sneak into my parents basement just to watch it because it was past my bedtime. I loved everything about it and always sort of kept up with it, so when the hosting role on Sportsnet’s WWE talk show Aftermath became available, I jumped at the opportunity and luckily I got it! I think it says a lot about the WWE brand and their desire and ability to adapt with the times. Not to mention, the loyalty of the fan base. WWE fans will go wherever the WWE and its superstars go. I think Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is a shining example of that. I have two favourite WWE Superstars, Stone Cold Steve Austin and The Rock. My favourite current WWE Superstar is probably Kevin Owens, but it changes every week!
otg: What tactics can you share that you use to make your trip to work as enjoyable as possible?
jackie: When I need to leave the city, I love taking the GO train. Depending on my mood, I usually read or listen to music, but I love it when I sit near someone that’s clearly a sports fan. If you see me on the GO and you’re sporting a visible NHL team logo, brace yourself because I will strike up a conversation with you.
otg: 2017 New Year’s resolutions?
jackie: I don’t know if this counts as a resolution, but I’m planning to start taking cooking classes this year, which I’m very excited about!
otg: Are you involved in any new shows, organizations or events that we should look out for?
jackie: I will be hosting a couple of charity events in February, including the London Celebrity Sports Dinner in my hometown of London, Ontario where I’ll be interviewing Bret Hart.
I will also be heading to Spring Training in February to collaborate with the Blue Jays for a second straight year. “Misplays with the Jays” was a huge hit last year and this year we’ve got some new tricks up our sleeves, so I’m pretty excited to share that with our viewers!
