She can do it all! SANGITA PATEL
by andrew chapados | Anyone who says you have to stick to one pathway to be successful hasn’t met Sangita Patel. Originally fueled by her love for science (graduating as an Electrical Engineer) Patel blossomed as a TV Weather Specialist which eventually led to a Weekend Weather Anchor position on CityNews; a position traditionally held by some of the most beloved personalities in Toronto, Sangita being no different. Her passion and drive allowed her to branch into entertainment and lifestyle when she began showcasing her own segment titled ‘In the City’ on CityNews. Subsequently, Sangita began filling in on Breakfast Television for the weather and ‘Live Eye’ segments. Now finding success on ET Canada and HGTV’s Home to Win, the fitness enthusiast Patel was kind enough to answer ONtheGO’s questions, as she cements herself one the most well-rounded presenters in the country.
otg: Let’s start from the top; you graduated as an Electrical Engineer, if you didn’t go into a career in television you would be ______?
sangita: I guess I would still be an Engineer. I am fascinated by how things work and function. I think I would’ve tried inventing a product that would make people’s lives easier.
otg: When you first became a TV presenter, who was your inspiration/ who did you try to emulate most?
sangita: Oprah, Connie Chung — women who are minorities, which was rare to see on television when I was growing up. They made me realize it was possible to be on television as a minority and help share impactful stories with the world that weren’t necessarily your own. When I started working at City there was one particular person who is now a dear friend of mine who truly emulated what I wanted to be as a TV personality. Someone real, genuine and just herself. And that is Dina Pugliese.
otg: You love posting your workouts and are clearly a fitness enthusiast; for those of us who are excuse-makers, how do you stay motivated to go to the gym when you’re clearly very busy with your TV shows and family life? What’s your favourite type of exercise?
sangita: As a mom you forget to take care of yourself, and suddenly all that matters are your kids. There came a point when I realized I wasn’t happy with myself. And that if I wasn’t happy, it would impact my family and the people around me. So after my second child I discovered Crossfit and it truly changed my life. I have never felt so physically and mentally strong in my life,
and I learned it wasn’t about being skinny — it was about being healthy. No dieting, just eating healthy, most of the time. Doing weights and gaining muscles keeps you young! Weight training is the best, which is the reason why I do #FitnessTuesday and to motivate mothers to know that if I can do it, you can too. And once you start, it becomes part of your schedule just like cooking dinner!
otg: In 2014 you were #41 on Hello Magazine’s list of the most beautiful Canadians, in your opinion, who do you think is the most beautiful Canadian?
sangita: I still can’t believe I made the list. There are so many beautiful Canadians. Tough question but I do believe in aging gracefully, finding natural ways to help with aging. And what defines beautiful? More of the inside than outside… my sisters, my daughters, my mom. Can I say my husband!?
otg: We love asking for our readership of commuters, how do you make your daily commute more tolerable?
sangita: I am always stuck in traffic, takes me at least an hour to get to and back from work. For me it’s finding a playlist. Music is always the cure for me and puts me in a good mood, and energizes me!
otg: What is your favourite event to attend or really want to attend, as part of the ET Canada team?
sangita: Just recently I covered the Screen Actors Guild Awards. My first time, and I had so much fun. I would love to do it again! The glitz and glam isn’t the same as the Golden Globes or Oscars but there is a lot of love between the stars and you can feel it when you are there. One of my favourite red carpets to cover.
otg: From weather presenter to ET Canada to HGTV, what are your goals and what can we expect from you next?
sangita: My mantra in life is to always do your best with the opportunities you are given, big or small, and people will notice. My ultimate dream is to have a daytime talk show since I love live TV and talking to people. The idea of doing a show like Live with Kelly would be amazing!
You can catch Sangita on ET Canada airing weeknights at 7:30pm ET on Global. Follow her online here: Twitter: @sangita_patel Instagram: @sangita.patel
