ST. MILDRED’S-LIGHTBOURN SCHOOL
SINCE 1891, EDUCATING GIRLS TO BE LEADERS IN OUR COMMUNITY
St. Mildred’s-Lightbourn School, Oakville’s premier independent school for girls, offers a dynamic learning environment for students from Pre-K to Grade 12. The school’s programs are designed to inspire and develop each girl as she continues on her path of learning. At SMLS, learning becomes leading.
Among the remarkable programs offered at SMLS is FIRST Robotics, which challenges girls from Grades 1 through 12 to compete against other schools in a series of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) challenges. At the primary level, students use LEGO® to build models based on real-world scientific concepts, while at the secondary level, girls build and program robots to perform prescribed tasks in competition.
SMLS has had amazing success at the FIRST Robotics World Championships. In 2015’s competition, the school was the first all-girls team to win the Engineering Inspiration Award. This premier award at the Championship singled out the achievement of the SMLS team as it competed against over 600 other schools.
Since the program’s inception in 2002, SMLS’s robotics team has grown from two girls to more than fifty, and has forged a pathway for girls to enter into the STEM fields of study at post-secondary institutions. Almost 30% of SMLS graduates go on to pursue degrees in the STEM fields, compared to the national average for girls of 19%.
As an Oakville Beaver article noted: “The high school robotics team at Oakville’s St. Mildred’s-Lightbourn School is helping break down the barriers for female students interested in STEM careers.”
St. Mildred’s-Lightbourn School has been inspiring girls to become empowered women since 1891. The goal of the school is to be a place where girls of every background can feel as though they can follow their passions and achieve the goals.
