Since 1931, the Canadian Mothercraft Society (“Mothercraft”) has been a leader in the delivery of supports and services to families with young children living in Toronto and has provided high quality education and training to the professionals who work with them.
Mothercraft’s licensed child care centres are among the most sought after in the city, providing enriched and stimulating early learning environments that are rooted in the latest research about how children learn and focused on optimizing child development as children prepare for entry to school. In addition to offering exceptional licensed childcare, Mothercraft also delivers parent-child drop-in programs, parenting workshops and supports to families whose children have special needs.
Mothercraft is an accredited children’s mental health organization, delivering comprehensive programs through unique partnerships and innovative approaches. “Breaking the Cycle”, an internationally recognized and award-winning early childhood intervention program, focuses on young children whose development may be at risk due to various factors resulting from parental substance use problems and the complex issues that are often associated with these problems such as domestic violence and mental health concerns.
As a further complement to the continuum of services delivered by Mothercraft is a small team of professionals who support community-based research, data analysis and evaluation for the early years’ sector across the city.
The roots of this dynamic organization are in education and training. Mothercraft College is the only private career college in Ontario certified to offer a Diploma in Early Childhood Education (ECE) and is recognized as a leader in the delivery of comprehensive education and training to the early learning and early years’ sectors. The combining of academic training within a non-profit service organization means that students are able to experience the theories of the classroom lived out in the delivery of services in an immediate and enriching way that isn’t offered by most post-secondary educational programs.
Significant new provincial initiatives, like full-day kindergarten and Best Start Child and Family Centres, mean that the demand for ECEs is on the rise and will continue to grow into the future. Mothercraft College provides students with unique learning opportunities and small class sizes that allow for individualized support. All of the courses are taught by instructors who are not only experts in adult education but are also experienced practitioners with many years of hands-on, day-to-day experience working with families and children. The 12-month accelerated diploma program distinguishes Mothercraft from other colleges in Ontario and allows students to complete their studies and be working in the field within a year. Financial assistance is available to eligible students.
