There’s More 2 The Story Than You Might Think
Most of us hop on the bus or take our vehicles to work each day. We load up the van to get the kids to soccer or hockey. And we hit the highway to escape the city on the weekend. But we rarely consider an important product that helps make our daily routines possible — oil.
Oil provides 92 percent of the world’s transportation fuel.
The growing need for energy worldwide gives Canada a clear advantage.
Our country has the third largest oil resource on the planet. And 97 percent of that resource is in the oil sands of northern Alberta.
It’s a resource that took Canadian ingenuity to access. That’s because the oil in the oil sands is very thick and needs specialized techniques to produce it.
About 20 percent of the oil can be accessed by mining. But most of the oil — 80 percent — is so deep that it can only be accessed by drilling, heating it up so it will flow, then pumping it to the surface.
These drilling projects are the type Cenovus operates.
As with all human activity, oil sands development has an impact on the planet. Oil companies such as Cenovus are working hard to tackle those environmental challenges.
They’re collaborating with each other, academics and governments to come up with solutions to the environmental challenges.
There have already been significant improvements and there’s lots more opportunity to get even better.
