Reducing and composting waste at home has been made easy because of the Blue Box and Green Bin. In fact, we recover and recycle almost 65 per cent of the materials we generate at home. Unfortunately, we don’t have the same success away from our homes, at work, theatres, coffee shops, etc., where we generate more than 9 million tonnes of material and only 13 per cent is recycled. Unlike municipal collection that’s uniform across an area, businesses are serviced independently, building-by-building, which often leads to differences on what is collected and ultimately recycled.
Environmental and social initiatives are important considerations when employees are searching out potential employers. Sustainability efforts bring pride to the workplace and can build cohesive and co-operative workforces. Offering a comprehensive and accountable recycling program demonstrates corporate responsibility and stewardship that elevates business reputation. Reducing waste can also save money.
Many companies are making great changes to integrate environmental sustainability as part of how they conduct business, starting with improving waste reduction. For Ontario to become an environmental leader we need to take action.
