Shopping As Activism?
Did you use a forest product today? Before you answer “no,” think about it: Did you scribble a message on a sticky note? Send a card to a friend? Use the bathroom or blow your nose? Gotchya, eh?
It’s easy to forget the huge role real forests play in our lives in the urban jungle. Yet, forests provide the air we breathe, the water we drink and the food we eat. Forests also provide us with the wood and paper products we use every day. Behind every piece of lumber and every sheet of paper or tissue, there is a story of a forest — and the animals and people that depend on it.
Am I destroying forests and animals when I use forest products?
You might be, if the manufacturer isn’t managing its forest resources properly. Mismanaged forests can disappear, along with everything that depends on them to survive, including us.
Is there a way to use forest products AND protect forests?
Yes. Responsibly managed forests can provide the products and economic activity we need but still be renewable, protect wildlife and the rights of Aboriginal Peoples. Fortunately, there’s an easy way to tell if the products you are buying come from a responsibly managed forest. Just look for products with the Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC® ) ‘check tree’ logo which provides you with the assurance that the product you are buying is made from responsibly managed forests and/or recycled sources. This ultimately ensures benefits to local communities, protection for sensitive forest areas and healthy forests for future generations.
What can I do?
You can help secure a future for the world’s forests, and the people and animals that depend upon them. Look for the FSC logo next time you buy a table, paper or tissue products. If you don’t see the logo, ask the store or manufacturer why not. Make sure they realize that you as a customer want to know the fate of the forests that provide the products you buy. Choose FSC so you can keep your life full of forest products while keeping our forests full of life.
