New Year’s Resolutions: Will You Keep Your Promise?
by Andrew Chapados | 68. This is the percentage of Canadians who make New Year’s resolutions. 19; the percentage of people who kept their resolutions for less than 24 hours. In fact, more than half of Canadians who make resolutions for the new calendar keep them for just one month. What may be surprising is that 19 per cent of Canadians do follow through with their resolutions for the entire year.
“Those who make New Year’s resolutions are 10 times more likely to achieve their goals than those who don’t.”
Compare that to our neighbours south of the border who stick to their resolutions at an underwhelming 8 per cent, and the aforementioned number all of a sudden seems a lot higher.
According to a report from Scranton University, about one out of three people make resolutions regarding their weight, money or relationships. However, Canadians are slightly more worried about their weight than Americans.
Three of the top 10 resolutions for Canadians were health and weight loss related, compared to just two of 10 for those in the land of the free.
This is an interesting statistic given that 18% of Canadians are classified as obese while the number is more than doubled in the United States at 37.5%.
Smoking is also a concern to most, ranking amongst the top resolutions in both countries, and people may keep that resolution in particular. As a steadily dropping statistic, smokers now make up approximately 17% of the population in both countries, ranking them outside of the top 50 (#51 for U.S., #63 Canada) in terms of cigarette consumption per capita.
Making resolutions in general is not the issue however, as they are a relatively successful ordeal.
In the same report from Scranton University mentioned above, those who make New Year’s resolutions are 10 times more likely to achieve their goals than those who don’t.
As a form of goal setting there is certainly no harm in making a resolution. Especially when making it past the dreaded one-month mark; New Year’s resolutions can help anyone keep their goals on track for the entire year.
