There are many different types of vacations: relaxing, adventurous, volunteer, theme-park oriented, the options are endless. Ensuring you get the type of vacation you need is important, and this can easily be accomplished with some thoughtful planning. Taking the time to plan before your vacation starts will ensure a happy and successful time away. After all, the last thing you want to do is come home from your vacation, needing a vacation!
To start, you need to determine the type of vacation to take. The best way to do this is to listen to your body. Sit and reflect on how you are truly feeling. If you’re struggling, let your mind wander and dream up the ultimate get-away. Still not sure? Here’s a helpful chart to get you started:
Bored with the routine of everyday life = An adventure-filled trip such as a safari, or a cruise with many ports-of-call and lots of excursions.
Tired and stressed out due to life’s busyness = A relaxing all-inclusive resort where everything is taken care of for you, just bring a book and some sunblock and enjoy lounging by the pool.
In need of some family time to bond together = A kid-friendly location, such as a theme park, or cruise that offers a kid’s centre will provide a balance between family time and down time.
Glued to your phone / tablet / computer = Off-the-grid — unplug entirely by going on a camping trip, or visiting a tech-free resort.
Broke and financially unable to go anywhere = A staycation — be a tourist in your own town visiting local hot spots, museums, or going golfing or to the spa.
Vacations are often thought of as a luxury, or a nice-to-do, but they are vital to achieving balance in today’s busy society. We are so plugged-in to technology all day long that many people are finding it hard, if not impossible, to relax at the end of the day. Vacations are a time to recharge our batteries. Spending a little time figuring out the right type of vacation you need will pay off tenfold when you come home feeling revitalized, and not in need of another vacation. Whether you go on an African safari, or stay home and play golf, is up to you. Listen to your body and do what makes you happy. Self-care is the key to finding balance and happiness.
