Five Things You Should Do When Choosing a New Home Builder
Buying a new home is likely the most important financial decision of your life. Make the right move and follow these five simple steps to help find the builder that is right for you.
SEARCH THE ONTARIO BUILDER DIRECTORY
The best place to start your search is by using the Ontario Builder Directory on Tarion.com. Make sure your builder is among the more than 5,000 registered builders in Ontario. The Directory offers helpful information about registered builders including how many home possessions they’ve completed in the last 10 years, where they build, and whether they had any chargeable warranty claims.
VISIT THE BUILDER’S WEBSITE
A builder’s website offers plenty of insight into the company, including neighbourhoods where they’ve previously built, sample floor plans/features, and other helpful customer service information. Be sure to check out any posted reviews or comments too.
VISIT THE SALES OFFICE
Front-line customer service/salespeople are always a good indication of the level of professionalism you can expect. Don’t forget to take home any printed information and materials for careful review later.
Once you know where builders of interest are building, visit their neighbourhoods. Check out the feel and vibe and talk to homeowners about their experience. Ask about their satisfaction level, whether the builder responds to service requests in a timely manner, and if there were any construction delays. If so, ask why.
TALK TO FAMILY & FRIENDS
Finally, don’t forget to talk to those closest to you. Ask them the same questions you would ask a builder or their homeowners in the communities you researched. Chances are you will get terrific ideas and insights.
Remember, start with Tarion.com to get key information on registered builders and go from there.
