Backyard vs Cottage Lifestyle With Frankie Flowers
by frankie flowers | I don’t cottage I backyard! 4 years ago I decided to drop my dreams of owning a cottage and invested in my backyard landscape. Why? My life is busy, I work early, get home late and I drive enough in traffic, who wants to pack up the kids, battle traffic to a cottage where you have to cut the grass, clean the washroom, pack up the family on Sunday, head home just to go back to work Monday! With my backyard, I get home from work, change my clothes and walk into paradise — no packing, no driving involved!
Investing in your landscape vs owning a cottage makes sense! You pay less tax! When you sell your home it’s your principal residence and comes with capital gains exemptions vs selling a cottage, aka secondary property, which under current tax laws is subject to tax on the increase in value from time of purchase of the property.
A landscape makes a home more attractive, more valuable and easier to sell. According to Money Magazine landscaping can bring a recovery value of 100 to 200 per cent at selling time. Compare that to kitchen remodelling at 75 to 125 per cent and bathroom remodelling at 20 to 120 percent — landscaping is and will always be a great investment.
Ontario homeowners are spending more on landscaping. For the last 5 years I’ve had the pleasure to host Landscape Ontario’s annual Award of Excellence ceremony awarding landscape companies for their outstanding work; each and every year landscape project numbers are growing with several projects topping out over $1 million in just landscape alone!
I’m not saying you need to spend a million bucks on a landscape but you should invest between 10–20% of the value of your home into landscaping. Take it from me landscaping is an investment and it’s not cheap — after installing a pool, building retaining walls, creating a seating area around a fire bowl, building a composite deck and installing some funky gas lamps at the entrance of my home my budget of $200k disappeared quickly!
I will say if you are considering landscaping take time to create a landscape design that not only looks good but also fits your lifestyle and your budget. The next step is to find a qualified contractor who has the experience, knowledge and certifications to see your project through from start to finish.
Be warned! 3 years ago my neighbours got taken advantage of. A “landscaper” provided them with a low bid, received a deposit, ripped up their front yard and never came back. This angered me my frustration has always been watching unqualified landscape contractors take advantage of people who deserved better and I’ve made it better by creating eLandscape.
The goal of eLandscape is to eliminate the “BAD” in the landscape industry by connecting homeowners with the BEST landscape professionals and provide expert advice and tips from industry leaders all in one place: www.elandscape.ca or on your iOS device. eLandscape introduces you to local verified landscape professionals, dedicated to offering you a quality landscape at a fair price.
